Particle Lab

Particles that glow from yellow to red, and explode out
Particles explode out every 4 seconds and linger for 5 seconds

Lecture Three
  • A vector image is a smart line that knows where it came from and where it's going (e.g. CAD drawings).
  • A raster image is a collection of dumb dots (e.g. tif, png or jpeg files).

  • A diagram is a visual representation or explanation.
  • Digital rendering concerns itself with texture, lighting, geometry and layers and in high quality rendering what matters most is the quality of images used, lighting and texture.
  • Drawn rendering uses pressure and different media.
  • Wikitecture openly invites people with a range of different backgrounds to work on projects - through both real life and the virtual world (including Second Life).
  • Cameron Sinclair is a founder of the non-profit organisation, Architecture for Humanity, which works towards a sustainable future. On Archvirtual.com, he comments on a hurricane relief project that was first built in Second Life: “The idea is, can we work collaboratively online, in places like Second Life, to respond to issues like Hurricane Katrina...…we starting in 1999 basically using email and a web page – and as we’ve progressed and as technology has progress, we’ve embraced new technologies.”
  • Toyo Ito is a leading contemporary architect who is interested in the idea behind architectural works.
  • Mediatheque is a library of resources - materials, books, periodicals...

Scratch for SL

Using Scratch for Second Life, I scripted the stairs to rotate, and the pyramid to rotate and change colours.
For our library, we used a tutorial from www.sutor.com to create sliding doors that open when collided into/ touched or clicked, that mimics a real life sliding door

Three Journals for my library:
  • Arkitektur DK
  • Interior Detail(s)
  • GA Documents
My bookmarking website is on Delicious.com
The two main databases for Architecture are:
  • Avery Index - Coverage of Architecural Periodicals from 1930 to the present, and this database updates weekly.
  •  APID - Architectureal Publications from 1978 to the present, and updates every 3 months.

Archicad 15 Tree house

Experimenting with different types of windows and materials - the roof is a glass shade.

Working on Triana's Treehouse:
I decided to add some people and a park bench into Triana's tree house since it seemed like a really nice social area.
Working on Hyewon's Treehouse:
I decided to add some more walls to section up her open floor area and also add grass to compliment her tree. Some people and furniture were also added to give a sense of scale.

Lecture Two:
  • BIM stands for Building Information Modelling, and BRANZ stands for Building Research Association of New Zealand.
  • 37% of respondents in the New Zealand National BIM survey use ArchiCad.
  • Template files are files that are empty, but have all the presets that you want.
  • Software that Frank Gehry used for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao included CAD (Computer Aided Design) which was used more for cars and planes.
  • The colour of the surface of the Museum was pale gold (made from titanium which reflected light in a completely different way from other materials).
  • Cognitive surplus is the shared, online work we do.
  • The difference between 20th century and 21st century media is that 20th century media was mainly just to consume, while 21st century media is more than that - it is about creating and sharing.
  • Design generosity - social justice starting to explain our intrinsic values, why we design the things we do.
  • Social constraints - barriers or borders created by society with values of right and wrong.
  • Communal value - something created by participants for each other.
  • Civic value - something created by participants but used by society as a whole, not just to be enjoyed by the participants.

Second Life

My avatar on second life sitting right at the top of the stairs, in the dramatic lighting environment I created.
Additive Colour - Mixing visible light (primary colours Red, Green, Blue) to create other colours, and together create white. The results influence the way we detect colour with our eyes.

Subtractive Colour - The opposite to additive colour. It involves mixing paints, dyes etc to create natural colours. Waves of light are absorbed by the surface of an object, and the wave of the colour of the object is reflected back.

Lecture One
  • Technology is everywhere, and architecture can be considered as the first. We use countless pieces of technology in everyday life from our phones to our heaters.
  • ArchiCad, Revit, Google SketchUp and AutoCad are some of the computer packages an architect might use.
  •  Rock Paper Scissors - The two guys are in different countries, one in Hong Kong and the other in America. In this video, they move from room to room as they play Rock Paper Scissors with each other. I would say roughly 12 paces are portrayed, including out in the street.
  • In the Digital Nation, Rosedale thinks he can slove alienation and isolation caused by technology with more technology. He created Second Life for people to come together in the virtual world and creating an atmosphere were you would act better than you would, say, chatting online or texting.
  • The IBM Complex was designed in the 1980's as a hub for all its employees, because it was supposed to be where they would come to work everyday.
  • Raydiosity is what we see in the world around us through how our eyes perceive light. Light bounces off surfaces and creates diffused lighting on its surrounding objects.
  • Graphic interference allows users to interact with images rather than text.
